My husband and I are very similar in that we both love the same things. We both make a habit of picking the same foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. It’s one of those things that we have a “habit” for. We also both have “habits” for certain things in life. He is a writer and I’m a teacher, so I’m naturally interested in the topic of self-awareness.

So first, what is self-awareness? It is the ability to recognize our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions and to say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas. That might not be a coincidence,” and to then exercise some meta-cognition and say, “I might as well just quit right now.

Self-awareness is a fairly basic trait, and you can also have it without ever being aware of it. It’s the ability to say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas. Like most things, having self-awareness is a lot like having a strong will. You don’t always have to exercise it. In fact, just like a strong will, self-awareness can be something you can use to get yourself out of situations where you probably shouldn’t have been. Being aware of your own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions is a good way to avoid making these same mistakes again.

By the way, I think this quote is pretty good for how we all should exercise our will, and it comes from the movie “Rudeness” by John Hughes.

And by the way, how to exercise your will? Let your body know what it’s made of, and what it can do. That, my friends, is exercise of the will.

You can also use a friend of mine to create a new habit, and she could give you a better way to do it. You can use that as part of your practice.

I’m not saying you have to be a monk. But you can do some of the exercises that work best for you based on what you’ve been reading. I’m not saying you need to do it all at once, but I know you can get into the habit of doing some of it over a long period of time. You can start small and then work up and up.

I think what julian jr gil is doing is making the habit of exercise of the will work for you. This is something I often speak with my students about. You have to think out-of-the-box to be able to accomplish anything, and once you are able to think that way, you can do anything. In other words, we are all capable of doing more than we think we can.

I love this quote because it shows that even though we are all capable of doing more, we are all still constrained by what we know. We can create and change our lives, but we can never change what we know. Asking if we can change what we know is like asking if we should start a new hobby. A new hobby is an idea, but it is not a reality. But if you want to change what you know, that is the path to change.
